Abstract

Purpose

Beijing is becoming one of the top global destinations but the number of international tourists to the city has been declining recently. By analyzing inbound tourists experience in Beijing and identifying the relationship between the destination attributes and satisfaction, the purpose of this paper is to provide important insights into city tourism research and city destination development.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used an online deductive approach and collected 1,254 reviews on TripAdvisor referencing major attractions in Beijing. This study used the Leximancer software to analyze the content of the reviews and to identify the underlying relationships.

Findings

The results showed that international tourists’ experience in Beijing can be reflected via five aspects: attractions, city, transportation, service and people. The results further indicated that the major concern of international tourists visiting Beijing related to the service quality on site.

Originality/value

This study explored inbound tourists experience in Beijing using an online deductive approach. Practical implications were provided with respect to improving international tourists experience in Beijing and enhancing their satisfaction and revisiting intentions.

Abstract

Purpose

The lubrication of the high-speed reducer of an electric vehicle is investigated. The specific contents include visualization of the flow field inside reducer, lubrication evaluation of bearings and efficiency experiment.

Design/methodology/approach

The flow field inside reducer at five working conditions: straight, uphill, downhill, left lean and right lean is simulated by smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). According to the instantaneous number of particles through bearings, the lubrication states of bearings are evaluated. The test platform is set up to measure the efficiency of the reducer.

Findings

The flow field inside the reducer is obtained, the lubrication of bearings needs to be improved, the efficiency of the electric vehicle reducer meets the requirement.

Originality/value

The SPH method is used to simulate lubrication instead of using the traditional grid-based finite volume method. A novel method to evaluate the lubrication of bearings is proposed. The method and conclusions can guide electric vehicle reducer design.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the long memory as well as the effect of structural breaks in the US and the Chinese stock markets. More importantly, it further explores possible causes of the differences in long memory between these two stock markets.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employ various methods to estimate the memory parameters, including the modified R/S, averaged periodogram, Lagrange multiplier, local Whittle and exact local Whittle estimations.

Findings

China's two stock markets exhibit long memory, whereas the two US markets do not. Furthermore, long memory is robust in Chinese markets even when we test break-adjusted data. The Chinese stock market does not meet the efficient market hypothesis (EMHs), including the efficiency of information disclosure, regulations and supervision, investors' behavior, and trading mechanisms. Therefore, its stock prices' sluggish response to information leads to momentum effects and long memory.

Originality/value

The authors elaborately illustrate how long memory develops by analyzing not only stock market indices but also typical individual stocks in both the emerging China and the developed US, which diversifies the EMH with wider international stylized facts and findings when compared with previous literature. A couple of tests conducted to analyze structural break effects and spurious long memory demonstrate the reliability of the results. The authors’ findings have significant implications for investors and policymakers worldwide.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to establish a conceptual framework on how hospitality and tourism educators could incorporate new technology and big data analytics into program curriculum.

Design/methodology/approach

The research developed a logic model to visualize the benefits/impact of hospitality and tourism data analyst via a literature review approach.

Findings

The incorporation of statistics, research and the knowledge of data exploration, analysis and insight into hospitality programs would enhance students’ data analysis competencies.

Research limitations/implications

This is a literature review paper, based on philosophical perspectives from literature review. It would be nice to conduct an empirical study with regard to data analytics in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Practical implications

The hospitality and tourism program coordinators and/or directors are urged to inspire more students who are interested in adding statistics and accounting studies to the hospitality and tourism field. Also, the hospitality and tourism data analyst would secure attractive job offers as well as enhance the average salary of hospitality and tourism graduates.

Hospitality and tourism data analytics would secure attractive job offers as well as enhance the average salary of hospitality and tourism graduates.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore cultural tourism investment and resident quality of life in the Midwestern city of Indianapolis, Indiana. It is important to understand from a cultural tourism perspective how further attempts to grow and invest in tourism will affect resident perception of quality of life and future cultural tourism investment.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve this goal, data from the 2012 Indianapolis Quality of Life survey was statistically analyzed to specifically examine how residents’ perceived quality of life affects cultural tourism investment. This allows for the study of what city-service attributes (i.e. safety, attractions, transportation, etc.) identify as potential indicators of whether residents’ perception of quality of life affects cultural tourism investment and if there were any correlations between demographic factors of age, gender, ethnicity, and household income with the perception that investing in cultural events and attractions for tourists is good for residents.

Findings

Results indicated that several key city-service attributes identify as potential indicators of whether residents’ perception of quality of life in Indianapolis affects residents’ perceptions that investing in cultural tourism for tourists is good for residents. Furthermore, excluding perceptions of cultural tourism investment, several key city-service attributes identified as potential indicators of residents’ perception of quality of life in Indianapolis. Finally, results indicated that demographic factors of gender, age, ethnicity, and income were not significant when it came to affecting the perception that investing in cultural events and attractions for tourists is good for residents.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study have unique academic and applied implications in the continued study of tourism in Indianapolis, Indiana. This study provided research related to the study of quality of life in Indianapolis and reported statistics for the 2012 Indianapolis Quality of Life survey. The data and statistical analysis reported in this study will serve as valuable information for future endeavors concerning cultural tourism and quality of life in Indianapolis. The identification of city-service attributes that significantly impact resident perception of quality of life and city-service attributes that, in conjunction with resident perception of quality of life, affect how residents perceive cultural tourism investments is important information that can be utilized by future researchers, tourism planners, and policymakers in Indianapolis. The analysis revealed what city-service attributes are important to residents of Indianapolis and demographic factors that affect resident perception of quality of life. The continued examination of these city-service attributes may help to identify areas of public service that need to be improved.

Practical implications

This study demonstrates that resident level of awareness pertaining to the benefits of cultural tourism investment are relatively low. Tourism planners, officials, and researchers can utilize this knowledge to better facilitate methods to gain resident support for cultural tourism investment and development. In addition, this research can be utilized to better understand the needs of residents and how tourism and various city-services impact their quality of life. If cultural tourism planners and other tourism officials better understand methods to gain resident support for cultural tourism investment then they can maximize economic and cultural tourism gains for the city.

Originality/value

This case study specifically focussed on cultural tourism to better present data regarding this issue; however, the authors believe future studies that examine both cultural and sports tourism could be beneficial. Aspects such as city-services and resident perception of quality of life could be examined from both cultural and sports tourism perspectives. This approach could produce beneficial results regarding cultural and sports tourism investment and potentially highlight demographic characteristics unique to cultural tourism and sports tourism supporters in the city of Indianapolis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study using thermoelectric module to harvest the waste heat from spindle units of machine tools and drive wireless sensors stable, thermal structure design and optimization of the thermoelectric module.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, mesh-free-based method, rather than the standard finite element method, is used to analyze the thermal behavior of the thermoelectric modules with different structure. After that, experiments are done to obtain the real power output performance of those modules and evaluate the performance of driving a wireless sensor with those modules.

Findings

The paper provides that the difference in geometry structure can cause apparent change in surface temperature of heat-conducting plate, and the optimized thermoelectric module could increase the output voltage by about 7 per cent compared with the one without optimization.

Research limitations/implications

It is found that the structure changing of the thermoelectric module is not the only way to increase the harvesting power, so a high efficiency power manage system is needed to be studied in the future.

Practical implications

The paper includes implications for the development of self-powered wireless sensors in the spindle unit for machine tool monitoring.

Originality/value

The paper develops models of thermoelectric modules with different structures on a rotating spindle, and tests the performance of driving wireless sensors with those thermoelectric modules.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to present the rationale, a numerical example and a case study of the application of an algorithm to convert non‐calendar based preventive maintenance (PM) schedules into calendar‐time format for semiconductor manufacturing systems (SMS). The resulting calendar‐time PM schedules can be utilized as a baseline within a PM scheduling optimization process.

Design/methodology/approach

The algorithm utilizes estimations of work‐in‐process (WIP) and system parameters to estimate an equivalent calendar‐time schedule for PM schedules based on different units. A numerical example based on fictitious data illustrates the utilization of the conversion algorithm within a mixed PM scheduling scenario, including wafer, processing‐time and energy‐based PM tasks for multi‐chamber tools. In addition, a case study illustrates the accuracy of the algorithm by comparing estimated PM targets (i.e. due, warning and late dates) with historical data from a real semiconductor fabrication facility.

Findings

Results from the case study validated the conversion algorithm by showing accurate estimations of PM targets (i.e. due, warning and late dates). The accuracy of the algorithm depends, however, on good estimates for WIP levels within the planning horizon.

Originality/value

The conversion algorithm may be utilized not only in SMS but also in other industries that require the conversion of non‐calendar based PM schedules into calendar‐time format for PM optimization and operational purposes.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper deals with some structural indicators and their evolution, in China and its regions, over the period 1981-2010.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses a quantitative approach. Linear programming and structural growth decompositions were used. The authors first produce estimates of the optimal productivities of incremental capital and the optimal incremental income elasticity of capital by means of a linear programming exercise. They then produce an accounting growth decomposition to assess the changes in the contribution of capital productivity, capital intensity and labour participation to the growth rate of output per capita. Finally, they combine an accounting growth decomposition with a standard production function, growth accounting, decomposition to assess the contribution of both capital productivity and capital intensity to total factor productivity (TFP). They also show in the Appendix the difference in the TFP growth contribution when marginal elasticities are assumed variable over time and when scale returns are assumed to be increasing rather than constant.

Findings

The main conclusion of the paper is that capital intensity, rather than capital productivity or labour participation, has been the main growth contributor. Capital productivity has fallen, while capital intensity has increased significantly, but that does not mean that quantity in itself, rather than quality, is behind such growth, as total factor productivity, which is significantly more than engineering technical change, has been relatively important over the period.

Originality/value

Both the use of linear programming to assess the evolution of incremental capital productivity and the decomposition of TFP.

Abstract

The theory of planned behavior (TPB) and place image have both been the foci of studies in understanding one’s intentional visit behavior in leisure research. Few studies, however, have ever attempted to differentiate the roles of attitude and image in predicting visitors’ intentional behaviors. This study is designed to fulfill this gap by examining the two concepts together in the context of responsible casino gaming. Based on the TPB and the concept of place image, a predicting model of visitor’s intentional behavior was posited and tested, based on a survey dataset collected in an American Midwest city. This study concluded that visitor’s attitude and perception of place image both play significant and distinctive roles in predicting visitor’s intentional behavior, and such perceptual discrepancies between attitude and image should be reflected and highlighted in leisure and marketing. Implications of this study in terms of leisure marketing are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

Continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRTPCs) with great mechanical properties and green recyclability have been widely used in aerospace, transportation, sports and leisure products, etc. However, the conventional molding technologies of CFRTPCs, with high cost and low efficiency, limit the property design and broad application of composite materials. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the 3D printing process on the integrated rapid manufacturing of CFRTPCs.

Design/methodology/approach

Tensile and flexural simulations and tests were performed on CFRTPCs. The effect of key process parameters on mechanical properties and molding qualities was evaluated individually and mutually to optimize the printing process. The micro morphologies of tensile and flexural breakages of the printed CFRTPCs were observed and analyzed to study the failure mechanism.

Findings

The results proved that the suitable process parameters for great printing qualities and mechanical properties included the glass hot bed with the microporous and solid glue coatings at 60°C and the nozzle temperature at 295°C. The best parameters of the nozzle temperature, layer thickness, feed rate and printing speed for the best elastic modulus and tensile strength were 285°C, 0.5 mm, 6.5r/min and 500 mm/min, respectively, whereas those for the smallest sectional porosity were 305°C, 0.6 mm, 5.5r/min and 550 mm/min, respectively.

Originality/value

This work promises a significant contribution to the improvement of the printing quality and mechanical properties of 3D printed CFRTPCs parts by the optimization of 3D printing processes.
